Facebook Page Checklist: How To Set Up Your Page

With the growth of social media, Facebook is often the first place customers turn to for help with your business. You want to make a good impression, and you also want to get the most out of your page. In this article, I’ll show you how to set it up like a pro so you’re looking schmick!

Personal Or Business Page?

People often ask me (especially people who are their own business like real estate agents) ask if they need a business page, or if they can use their personal account. My answer is always get a page. Your personal profile will naturally get more engagement from your friends, but with a page you can:

  • Run Facebook & Instagram ads.

  • See incredibly useful analytics.

  • Have more than 5000 friends / fans.

  • Make it easy to get in touch with you.

They are four HUGE reasons to use a business page over a personal one. Trust me!

Create a Page

First off, you’ll need a Facebook Business Page. If you have one already, you can skip this! When you create a page, select the most relevant option for the category (most likely ‘Local Business or Place’)

Username

This will be the username of your page and also the website URL. You want to keep it short and consistent with your other accounts (e.g. website / Instagram etc). Click About and then Edit. Here’s where you update that.

Profile Photo

This should also be consistent with the rest of your accounts. If you’re a person (e.g. a real estate agent or a coach), use a headshot that clearly shows your face. If you’re a business, use your logo that fits neatly in the circle, and nothing is getting cropped out.

Cover Photo

Upload a nice cover photo or video. This is one of the first things people see, so make it pop! Also make sure that it fits well on a mobile and nothing important gets cropped out.

Short Description

This is like the elevator pitch of your page. Don’t make this vague or hard to understand, make it really clear. For example: Real estate agent with 20+ years experience, helping Northern NSW homeowners get more for their property.

Button

Pick a button for your page. Personally, we like Send Message the most because it makes it easy to get in touch with you. You can have two buttons, which can work well if you want to send people to your website or get calls. Click Edit Button and pick one that works for you.

your Story

This is the longer section of your page and where you can go into more detail specifically about what you do, your backstory, testimonials etc. This is important to fill out especially if you don’t have a website! Check out our page to see a completed example.

Add Or Remove Tabs

By default, Facebook will give you a bunch of tabs, a lot of which you likely won’t need. For example if you’re a real estate agent, you don’t need the Shop or Offers tab. Go to Settings then Edit Page to remove these. You might also want to add some like Services if it’s relevant - you pick!

Additional Info

Fill out the rest of the basic information like your website, email, other accounts etc.

Preview the Page

Once you’re done, it’s a good idea to check out how it looks to a page visitor. Here’s how you do it.
